COVENTRY CITY STADIUM TO HOST
OLYMPIC FOOTBALL
By Paul
Roberts
Coventry City's Ricoh Arena has been named
as a venue of the 2012 Olympic Games' football
tournament.
The ground, which has a capacity of 33,000,
will be renamed the City of Coventry Stadium during the event
and received the nod after scheduled building work ruled
Aston Villa's Villa Park out of
contention.
Recently-appointed sports minister Hugh
Robertson said: "The stadium is ideally located for thousands
of people to come and watch the London 2012 football
competition and be inspired to get involved in
sport."
Other stadiums earmarked for use include St James'
Park, home of newly-promoted Newcastle United, Manchester
United's Old Trafford and the capital's own Wembley
Stadium.
Wembley ground staff will no doubt be hoping that
the much-publicised problems with its pitch can be resolved
in time for the showpiece event, after Chelsea captain John
Terry condemned it as being the worst he had played on all
season following last month's FA Cup
final.
